We know that the process of hiring a contractor and/or team can be intimidating. SCCI is here to make this as simple and stress-free as possible for you, and to make sure you are prepared for your project. Below we've answered a few questions that we get most commonly, to hopefully help you find some answers. If you have a question that isn't answered below, please reach out! We're here to help.
We start with you reaching out! Fill out our form, and let us know what you're thinking. Include as many details as you know at the moment, but don't feel pressured to have it all figured out.
Next, one of our team will reach out to you via text or email - whichever you indicate in the form. Depending on the size and complexity of the project, we'll either ask you for more information & photos or set up a virtual walkthrough with you.
After we are certain we understand your project, we'll create a labor cost estimate and send it over to you. Please note: we are a small team! During our busy seasons it can take us a little bit to get an estimate put together, as we do it all by hand to make sure our pricing is reasonable for each project. If you're in a significant rush, please let us know ahead of time so we can adjust.
Once you have the estimate, you'll take a look at the numbers and make sure we're a fit for you. If the numbers are too high, don't worry! We can chat about ways to lower the cost on your project. Or, if we're truly not the right fit for you this time around, we'll refer you to one of the trusted members of our professional network.
If the numbers look good to you, we'll get started with scheduling and planning for your project!
This may seem like a long process, but it doesn't have to be. We designed this process intentionally, to make certain everyone is on the same page before moving forward. If you're concerned, please let us know!
Rest assured, you're not alone in this! It's really easy to find little things you'd like to fix or improve in your home and just set them aside to do later until suddenly you're overwhelmed by the to-do list. If you find yourself in this position, send us your to-do list! We are more than happy to help you tackle it.
If you are just tired of your home as it is, but aren't sure what's within your power, take a look at our home repairs and home improvements pages. There, we've listed some common projects (and some projects that we just wanted to brag about) to help you get oriented.
Still not sure where to start? Reach out! We'll work with you to figure out a starting point.
We have two kinds of projects: hourly and contract.
Hourly projects are either small and simple projects, or are situations where there are unknowns (for instance, if we have to investigate why a light isn't working). These projects are billed, as you will guess, by the hour. Our hourly rates depend on how many team members are assigned, and what level of skill is required. You can see a better breakdown of these rates on our services page.
Contract projects are larger, and so come with a larger pricetag. When you reach out to start a project like this, we will make sure to gather all the information we need before providing you with estimated labor costs. We do all of this work by hand, and we often lower our pricing to make sure it feels accurate to the work that will be performed. Our team is not here to upsell or take advantage of you. Quite the opposite - we want to make sure you are well informed every step of the way! You likely won't find our team to be the cheapest option out there (although we have heard we're rather budget friendly from some!), but we hope you'll find our careful service and dedicated attention well worth it.
Of course! We are happy to walk through the options with you and help you choose what will be best for your situation. While we know we may not be the right choice for everyone, we promise complete transparency with you about cost.
We do have an active training program, where people for whom barriers typically exist to get into this industry can join our team as apprentices and learn under the careful instruction of our team. For certain projects, we offer a lowered 'training rate' where our apprentices will do the work to get some on-site experience. They are, of course, carefully supervised by our lead contractor. Let us know if you have a project you'd like them to work on!
We take pride in our work. If there is an issue, please let us know right away! Once we agree on pricing, both parties sign a contract - which includes a warranty on our work. Should something go wrong within the warranty window, we will fix it free of charge! If the warranty has expired, we are still happy to make a return visit.
We maintain a standard of communication with you when we are working on your home. If something happens to go wrong while we are there, we will let you know immediately, and work with you to figure out the best solution for you.
We don't judge! A lot of projects can make a mess, so don't worry about your home being spotless. There are some projects, like painting a room or doing a closet makeover, that are easier if the space is cleaned out. However, if that will prove a headache for you, let us know and we will see what we can do for you.
In order for caulk to adhere properly, all surfaces must be very dry. We ask that you avoid using the shower/bathtub/other area for 12 hours before our team arrives. Once we have finished the work, the caulk will need to dry for another 12 hours, to make sure it is water tight. Essentially, we ask you to not get your shower (or other area) wet for 36 hours.
Beyond this, you don't have to do anything! If you want to move the shampoo bottles, etc., out of the shower, you are welcome to. However, our team expects to move items to ensure everything stays clean, so that time is built into the estimate. As always, let us know if you have concerns!
Your home, your rules! If you need us to load out all of our materials every evening, we will do that. If you want the materials contained to one room, we can do that too! Just let us know what you'd prefer and we can make it happen.
It has been a dream of the SCCI founder, Lindsay, to have a program where women and LGBTQ+ people can gain the knowledge and experience to work in this industry. Typically, it can be very difficult for those from these demographics to get into the home improvement industry. When they do they often face misogyny, bigotry, or other mistreatment. She Can Caulk It is, first and foremost, a home improvement company, but we are also a safe space for people to gain entry into this industry.
Our training program has 5 levels, starting with a (paid) apprenticeship for those who have little to no knowledge about home improvement. They are tasked with learning, through modules and on-site, hands-off, teaching. As they gain knowledge and skills, they move through the levels until they are okayed to handle just about any project that we take on. In the more beginning stages, we offer a reduced rate to our customers to allow for our apprentices to learn on-site while being supervised by our lead contractor. If you have a project in mind that you believe would be a good fit, reach out!
We all know the best way to learn something is to do it. Our training program follows this idea, but apprentices do minimal work onsite at a customer's home. Instead they are tasked with observing and occasionally trying out a small piece under the watchful eye of their trainer.
That being said, we do have higher-level trainees who are given the opportunity to work on projects themselves. At this level, we are confident in their ability but we are the first to acknowledge that they are still learning. If a trainee does work in your home, and you are not satisfied with the result, just let us know! Our lead contractor is more than happy to come make it right within the scope of our warranty.
This is entirely up to you! While our team will be hard at work getting your project done, we can absolutely adjust to the amount of communication you would like to have with us. At the very least, you will hear from the team leader when there are decisions to be made and for updates on the timeline. If you're going to be staying elsewhere while the project is going on, and would like daily updates, we can make that happen!
You can expect that your dog will receive lots of love and admiration from our team. Just let us know ahead of time so that we can plan our materials and any protection accordingly!
We prefer payment via Zelle. However, we can also accept PayPal, check, or cash. We avoid online card payments, so that we don't have to charge our customers an additional fee! If you need a different option, we're happy to see what we can do.
